Polish General Tadeusz Kościuszko designed the defenses of Fort Clinton, a defensive garrison at West Point. The fort was key in overlooking and protecting the Hudson River. West Point was considered to be the most important military post in America by George Washington. Earthworks from the fort still remain, they are down and to the left of the statue.
