This is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area and the 3rd-largest by volume, holding 10% of the world's surface fresh water. The northern and westernmost of the Great Lakes, it straddles the Canada–USA border with the province of Ontario to the N and E, and the states of Minnesota to the NW and Wisconsin and Michigan to the S. It drains into Lake Huron via the St. Marys River, then through the lower Great Lakes to the St. Lawrence River and the Atlantic Ocean.
