Larry Ellison is the co-founder and chief executive officer of Oracle Corporation, one of the world's leading enterprise software companies. As of 2012, he is the third wealthiest American citizen, with an estimated worth of $36.5 billion.

It is reported that Ellison spent between $500M and $600M to purchase 90% of the Hawaiian island of Lana'i which is over 88,000 acres of land, plus two resorts, two golf courses, a stable and various residential and commercial buildings.

The majority of the island was once owned by James Dole of Dole Food Company Inc., who bought it in 1922.
