This is one of the locks on the Trent & Mersey canal which is known as Church Lawton bottom lock.
The 93 mile (150km) long Trent & Mersey canal links the rivers Mersey and Trent and to provide inland waterway route linking the ports of Liverpool and Hull.
The rise on this lock is 8’ 7” (2.31m).
Lock 48 is a double lock which allows two narrowboats to use the lock at the same time. This type of lock had the twin advantages of speed and saving water.
Bottom Bridge No. 136 is a few yards away to the west. This bridge carries a track over the canal.
