Madonna is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and businesswoman. She is known for reinventing both her music and image, and as a result, the "Queen of Pop" is an inspiration for many of today's contemporary artists.
Born in Bay City, Michigan, Madonna attended the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance before moving to New York City to pursue a career in modern dance. After singing with Sire Records in 1982, she began releasing albums, with many singles that reached #1 on the Billboard charts. Several, including "Into the Groove", "Papa Don't Preach", "Like a Prayer", "Vogue", "Frozen", "Music", "Hung Up", and "4 Minutes" were written and produced by her.
In music, Madonna was known for her ever-changing appearance and elaborate reinventions, including layered cross necklaces and leather during the popularity of "Like a Prayer" the mid-1980's, and trademark blonde ponytail/coned bra corset during the Vogue tour in the 1990's. She borrowed a Marilyn Monroe look for her "Material Girl" phase, stripped down to a basic look and short haircut for "Papa Don't Preach," and channeled Eva Peron during the promotion of "Evita."
Outside of music, Madonna has acted in several motion pictures, including Dick Tracy, A League of Their Own, and the Next Best Thing. While most of her films have been panned by critics, she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for Evita in 1996, also contributing the hit song "Don't Cry for me Argentina" to the soundtrack.
