'Mahatma Gandhi' by Fredda Brilliant

The centre-piece of the gardens is a statue of Mahatma Gandhi, sculpted by Fredda Brilliant and installed in 1968. The maquette is in the possession of her niece and was shown on the BBC television programme Antiques Roadshow in April 2013. The hollow pedestal was intended, and is used, for people to leave floral tributes to the peace campaigner.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948), commonly known as Mahatma Gandhi or Bapu (Father of Nation), was the preeminent leader of Indian nationalism in British-ruled India. Employing non-violent civil disobedience, Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for non-violence, civil rights, and freedom across the world.
