Chillington House, an Elizabethan manor house, houses the Maidstone Museum and Art Gallery. The manor house was completed in 1577 and, after being acquired by Maidstone Borough Council, opened as the Charles Museum in 1858 and was later renamed the Maidstone Museum. A new wing was added in 2007 to extend the art gallery.
