Manuel II of Portugal was the last King of Portugal, ascending the throne after the assassination of his father, King Carlos I, and his elder brother, Luís Filipe, the Prince Royal. Before ascending the throne he held the title of Duke of Beja. His reign ended with the fall of the monarchy during the 5 October 1910 revolution.

During his exile, Manuel lived in this home before settlign in Twickenham, Middlesex, England.

The home was used as a filming location in the 1999 film, The End of the Affair, starring Ralph Feinnes and Julianne Moore.
