Martin Baum was a businessman and politician.

The home was later owned by Nicholas Longworth, a banker and winemaker.

President William Howard Taft accepted his presidential nomination from the portico in 1908. Taft's half-brother lived in the home at the time.

The main house was designed by architect James Hoban, best known for his design of the White House.
