Mary M. Macdonald (1789–1872) was a Scottish woman who only spoke Scottish Gaelic. Mary wrote the lyrics to a Scottish text and called it "Leanabh an àigh" or "Bunessan" after the nearby town onth Isle of Mull. It's a Christmas Carol and also used as funeral song for children.

1927 a Alexander Fraser heard the tune when visiting the Scottish Highlands and in 1931 Eleanor Farjeon rewrote it to a song everyone knows today, "Morning Has Broken". One of the most covered songs ever sung by among others: Art Garfunkel, Roger Whittaker and the most famous versiion of all, that by Cat Stevens in 1971.

The ruins of her house can still be seen near the memorial.
