Noble Park Velodrome was funded & built in 1955 by the Noble Park Cycling Club and residents. Maurice Kirby also raised half the funds to have the Noble Park Velodrome constructed.

On 27 May 2002, City of Greater Dandenong (CGD) renamed the velodrome in honour of Maurice Kirby for his work as 3XY radio announcer, Channel 9 sports presenter & decades of community work including Noble Park sports clubs, Pedal Clubs of Victoria & raising funds for countless charities.

In 2005, Maurice Kirby was voted one of 14 Sporting Heroes of Greater Dandenong in a resident’s poll to coincide with 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Mr Kirby was well known for establishing the popular Pedal Clubs of Victoria in the 1950s, which got 50,000 children across Australia on their bikes. He ran a bicycle shop for decades in Noble Park, and was a popular, versatile sports broadcaster on radio station 3XY and Channel 9.
