The heart of the automobile continues to beat at the company’s original plant on the banks of the Neckar river in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim. Axles, transmissions and engines for Mercedes-Benz vehicles are produced here and sent on their way to assembly facilities around the world. The main recipients are the passenger-car production plants at Sindelfingen, Rastatt and Bremen in Germany, Tuscaloosa in the USA and East London, South Africa.
With its seven branches, the Untertürkheim plant is one of the company’s most up-to-the-minute production locations. In 2003 alone, parts were manufactured here for more than a million vehicles, equating to daily production of some 4,500 complete drive systems. Every year, the plant welcomes around 1.000 trainees to prepare for their careers ahead.
