The W140 series of Mercedes Benz's flagship luxury sedan, the S-Class, began production in April 1991, after its introduction via a press release on November 16 in the previous year. It was originally set to enter production in October 1989 but was delayed to allow a high-performance braking system and the availability of a V12, the first for a production S-Class. A design by Bruno Sacco influenced by contemporary sedans such as Jaguar's XJ40 and BMW's E32 7-Series, 406,710 sedans were built through September 1998.
