The village of Bento Rodgigues has been wiped out by debris from two Mine Tailings Dams Collapses (Santarem & Fundao Dams in Germano Complex) just northwest of the village.

Open Pit Mine is just to the east.

The mine is operated by a joint venture of Vale/BHP (Broken Hill Properties).
