Mitchel AFB, Long Island (abandoned)

Hempstead, New York (NY), US
Mitchel AFB was first established in 1917 as the glamourously named "Aviation Field No. 2". It soon was renamed Mitchel Field and became the base of New York City's air defence during the wars. After World War II, Mitchel AFB was also used as a test field by various manufacturers of defence aviation equipment.

In April 1961 flying was halted and the unit reassigned to McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey. With the reassignment of the 514th, Mitchel AFB was subsequently closed on 25 June 1961. The property was turned over to Nassau County.

The former base is home to Hofstra University, Nassau Community College, and Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The main runway, however, can still be seen in the northeast and southwest corner of this image.

That was not a p-47 that crashed into Hofstra college building, It was a C-47 transport plane. I remember seeing it stuck in the side of the building. Don Clarke former Oceanside resident

Text of description has been updated. Research indicates Mitchell AFB was closed due to public outcry regarding multiple crashes over a time. The P-47 crash was actually in 1943.

I remember the " Flying Box Car " planes flying over our house off Stewart Avenue. in Westbury, so low you could see people in the cockpits... from early 50's.... 51-59..... to very early 60's .. 60-61 and I ended up in the USAF, as Navigation/Bombing Avionics Technician.... 65-91, C-130/141/5, RC/KC/EC 135s, F4s, Hueys... loved it

I am looking for anyone who would have been stationed with my father Robert David Nee at Mitchell Air Force Base in the late 1950's. My father was last stationed at the Air Force base in Ramstein, Germany and took his life on October 17, 1961.

My Dad Joseph W Stancavage was stationed there 1958/59/60 and we were all sent to Robins AFB, Ga in 1960. We lived in the off base housing area and as a kid i would see the bright lights of Roosevelt Race Track at night. On the weekends it was always a treat to travel to Jones Beach in the summer. Sometime in that timeframe Hurricane Donna hit the area. Does anyone have pics of the housing area?
