The fortress of Mondavio is one of the most important and interesting examples of the project activity in the military by Francesco di Giorgio Martini in the Marche. It was built by order of Giovanni della Rovere, together with other castles of the Ducato (Cagli, Cantiano, Fossombrone, Frontone, Sassocorvaro, Pergola, Mondolfo) and probably dates from the later phase of the Sienese architect, probably decade 1482-1492. The building remained unfinished for the return of the architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini in his native Siena.
