In 1942 the Nant-y-Gro Dam was used by Barnes Wallis to test bouncing bombs effects on dams. This was the begin of the Operation Chastise (Dambusters) destroying the Möhne Dam, Eder Dam, Sorpe Dam and Ennepe Dam in Germany 16–17 May 1943.
