The Naval Facility Antigua was commissioned on 9 August 1956. The first Commanding Officer was LCDR R. Hinmon. As one of the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, Antigua is considered by many to have the best climate in the Caribbean. This island, discovered by Columbus in 1493, is comprised of large peaks, rolling hills, and fine sandy beaches accentuated by rough rocky coasts. After operating for more than twenty-seven years, NAVFAC Antigua was decommissioned 4 February 1984.
