Odd censorship

Odd censorship

East Farmingdale, New York (NY), US
I was looking for the 56th Fighter Group restaurant and found it here. But it was oddly blurred. Panning around the entire airport but nothing else in the area is fogged out. Note that the airport buildings are not censored but an area exactly coresponding to the runways and tarmac is censored. Very odd.

I have not encountered this type of censorship before.

And why THIS runt of an airport?

Hmm. Same type censorship at Long Island MacArthur Airport just to the east, also on Long Island.

What’s odd to me is that the level of pixilation is so minor that I’m not sure what they are hiding. You can see the layout of the base, what kind and how many aircraft, the general purpose of the structures, that sort of thing. So what is it that they are hiding?

I agree. AND they aren't even bases. They are local commuter airfields.

I'll take a WAG: Small SAM sites.

I'm guessing it is fallout from the 911 fear-mongering. The airports are close enough to NYC that alarmists probably feared some form of exploitation of the images by terrorists. (This despite the fact that these airports are open to the public.) Just a guess but it fits with the state-of-mind around here when the images were taken.

One of the roads is called Grumman Lane. Does Northrup Grumman have a plant in the area with something in the works they don't want to us to see?

It's interesting Live Local doesn't have the same blurring; however, they also don't have the same resolution. Their BirdsEye imagery can be nudged up right to the northwest corner, revealing a number of light aircraft and some small jets, but it ends there.

Here's a little article on Long Island aviation history: http://www.newsday.com/community/guide/lihistory/ny-history-hs736a,0,7813062.story

This was Republic's plant/airport and Grumman was down the road at Bethpage.

Grumman Aircraft Engineering built planes at the airport from 1932 until 1937.

Ok, so it isn't really a runt of an airport, "It is the third busiest airport in New York in terms of aircraft movements behind only John F. Kennedy (KJFK) and LaGuardia (KLGA)" according to wikipedia.

What is censored is NOT the 56th Fighter Group restaurant

The censorship is gone in the latest version of the imagery actually.
