Commissioned by the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, 'Out of Many, One', a six-acre portrait on the National Mall in Washington DC, was created by Cuban-American artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada. It is comprised of of 2,000 tons of sand, 800 tons of soil and 8 miles of string, and is visible from space.
