To the NE is an old Soviet air base. There is the remains of a SA-2 site between here and the airfield that has been scraped away.

Your looking at a pair of "Bar Lock" early warning radar, most often seen near an SA-5 site but they also appear near SA-2s. They are parked atop mounds of earth to get them higher off of the ground and thereby increase the range at which they can detect low flying targets such as cruise missiles and low flying planes.

Interesting. I've run into numerous ramp-shaped mounds throughout Iraq and wondered what they were. Now I know. Thanks for the detailed posts. We all appreciate it.

The Barlock RADAR system was developed in USSR in the 1950's. I came across them in North Vietnam in the 1960's. Where they were used to detect US airplanes. I would detect them on my EW equipment frequently.
