The Palmachim Israeli Air Force base houses rocket testing grounds and space launching facilities for the Israeli Defense Forces and the Israeli Space Agency. The Shavit rockets with Ofeq satellites were launched from this site. The base is also home to several IAF helicopter squadrons.

Also nearby is the Soreq (sometimes spelled "Sorek") Nuclear Research Institute which houses a small (5MW) nuclear research reactor.
