The Citadel was part of the Western Heights defences constructed on the west side of Dover during the Napoleonic Wars. The Citadel was still unfinished in 1815 when wars ended. The Citadel has been in prison use since 1952 and is now used as an Immigration Removal Centre. It is not open to public.
