In June 1942 Flight Sergeant Dennis Copping flying a damaged aircraft, taking it to be repaired, lost his bearings and flew off course. The pilot is presumed to have survived the crash because of evidence nearby and the lack of a body at the crash site, however he succumbed to the harsh desert heat after abandoning the site.
