In the late 1970s the town of Bedford -- "The Limestone Capital of the World" -- tried to build a one-fifth scale limestone replica of the Great Pyramid of Cheops, and a 650-foot-long limestone version of the Great Wall of China, and open them as a combined tourist attraction named "Limestone Tourist Park." The town received $200,000 in federal money to begin the project, and work began. But Wisconsin Senator William Proxmire, who at the time was promoting his "Golden Fleece Awards," got wind of the boondoggle in 1981 and blew the whistle. The grants dried up. The project collapsed.
