Remains of Jackson Motor Speedway

Jackson, Michigan (MI), US
This auto racing venue operated from 1948 until 1973. The original track located here was a 1/2 mile dirt oval track. A short-lived 1/4 mile oval was built inside of the larger track in 1953.

In 1954, a 3/8 mile track was created by using the high banked turns 1 and 2 from the 1/2 mile track and the flat turns 3 and 4 from the 1/4 mile track. Most of the races were then held on the 3/8 mile oval, but the 1/2 mile track was still occasionally used.

After a change in ownership, it was paved in the fall of 1958. It was repaved in 1968. Gordon Johncock won the 1963 track championship and would go on to win the 1973 and 1982 Indy 500 races.

The track surface is relatively intact, and several other artifacts, such as guardrails, remnants of the grandstands, and light poles are still on site.

The tracks were not leveled in 1954. The big 3/8 mile dirt was created by combining the high banks turns one and two with the flat turns 3 and 4 of the 1/4 mile in 1954. Races were mostly run on the 3/8's with a couple on the 1/2 mile in 1954. The track was sold in 1958 and was paved in the fall of 1958. The track was repaved in 1968.
