Bat 21 Bravo was the rescue sign for Iceal "Gene" Hambleton, an Air Force navigator from a shot down EB-66. Hambleton was the only survivor, evading the North Vietnamese for 11 1/2 days and losing 45 pounds in the process. He was a high-value asset as he had top secret knowledge of Strategic Air Command operations. For the five days, five aircraft were shot down and another 16 were seriously damaged. 10 service members were killed or MIA in attempts to rescue Hambleton.
Navy SEAL Lt. Thomas R. Norris and Petty Officer Third Class Nguyen Van Kiet travelled 2.5 miles behind enemy lines dressed as fishermen using a sampan to rescue Lt. Col Iceal Hambleton.
