On January 1, 2010, the Paraitinga river (Rio Paraitinga) flooded much of the lower elevation areas of the town. Numerous historical buildings were destroyed with many more damaged and which may be unsalvageable. The church in the central square collapsed during the flood. It had been built in the early nineteenth century and served as the symbol of São Luíz do Paraitinga. The church's destruction, as well as the flooding, was recorded by several people
