On May 14, 1805 the expedition was headed up the Missouri River in their pirogues when one of the boats capsized. Sacagawea quickly rescued the journals and records that had fallen from the boat. As a result of her quick thinking and action the expedition corps commanders named the Sacagawea River in her honor.
