The Saint Peter and Saint Paul Archipelago is a group of 15 small islets and rocks approximately 590 miles (940 km) from the coast of Brazil. The archipelago was discovered in 1511 by Portuguese Captain Garcia de Noroha by accident. In 1986 the archipelago was designated an environmentally protected area. Today the Brazilian Navy man the island for research and operate the lighthouse.
