Sakurajima (Cherry island) is an active volcano near Kyushu, Japan. The volcano was an island until lava flows connected it to the Osumi Peninsula in 1914. The volcanic activity still continues with ash erruptions. In March 2014, the volcano was upgraded to a level 3 (orange) alert by the Japanese, meaning it is active and should not be approached.
