In May 1973, two children on holiday encountered Sam the Sandown Clown, a strange, unidentified clown-like entity last seen in Sandown on the Isle of Wight. Hearing an ambulance-like siren, the children wandered across a footbridge over a stream. It was here that they met the curious and friendly being that they said was a cross between a clown, a robot, and an alien. He told the children that his name was Sam.

The being spoke to the children for almost half an hour, inviting them into its two-story metal hut in a wooded area close to the lake. Eventually, the children left. Several weeks later, the father of one of the children explored the area where the incident occurred, but he found no trace of Sam or the metal hut.
