The castle was originally built here in the 12th century but the present castle was built between 1862 and 1893 by K. Fruhling and includes parts of the medieval building. Until 1945 it was the residence of the earls of Stoltberg who took the name von Stolberg-Wernigerode from their principality, the earldom of Wernigerode.
