Built in 1927 by the Weimar Republic, the Tannenberg Cenotaph commemorated fallen German soldiers of the Battle of Tannenberg in 1914. It was once the burial place of Paul von Hindenberg. In 1945, as Soviet forces advanced into East Prussia, Adolf Hitler ordered Hindenberg's remains to be disinterred and moved to Marburg and the memorial destroyed.
