Sombrero Key Light is located off of Marathon Key and sits on a submerged reef. The lighthouse received its name from old Spanish charts showing an island at the spot. The island has since eroded away. The lighthouse was put into service in 1858 and deactivated in 2015. At 142-foot (43 m) tall, the lighthouse is the tallest in the Florida Keys.
