Schmidt was raised in North Plainfield, New Jersey and attended college at the University of Delaware from 1988-1993. He majored in political science but left school three credits short of graduating. He eventually took the final math course necessary to graduate in 2013.

In 2006, he left the White House to become the campaign manager for California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s re-election campaign before being hired to work on the McCain campaign.
