Swansea is a category B local prison, which holds adult males, remanded into custody from the courts, convicted and sentenced prisoners.

The prison was completed in 1861, and has remained substantially un-changed since then, although ‘D’ wing has had additional accommodation added and the reception, kitchen and visits area have been re-built. Considerable refurbishment of existing accommodation areas is currently underway including a new pedestrian gate, healthcare and the re-establishment of ‘B’ wing as a residential unit.
