Japan Atomic Power Company's Tōkai powerplant has two reactors. The first one, gas cooled Tōkai 1, was Japan's first commercial reactor. Building started in 1960 and it was in production in 1966. It was closed in 1998. The second one, Tōkai 2, is boiling water reactor and started commercial operation in 1978 and is still in use.
