The Apollonio Stadium

Cortina, Italy (IT)
The Apollonio Stadium (Stadio Olympica) was used for the ice hockey tournament. It was also the site of the opening and closing ceremonies. Considerable work had to be done to bring the stadium up to date. A second rink was added to allow for two games to be held simultaneously. The stadium seating was enlarged to accommodate 2,000 people. Temporary seating was added to increase the capacity to 12,000 seats for the opening and closing ceremonies. The stadium also was outfitted with electric lights for the first time

Please note: the Apollonio Stadium did not hold the opening and closing ceremonies, which were held at the Olympic Ice Stadium (Stadio Olimpico Del Ghiaccio). Also, the Apollonio, while well prepared for the 1956 Olympics, only had a few select hockey games on it's itinerary.
