A year ago, when the Butchers – already reduced to intermittent opening days – closed down definitively, the villagers decided to buy it. A co-operative was formed and shares offered at £1 each, with the aim of raising £300,000. The issue sold out, with almost the entire community taking a stake, and last week the re-furbished, re-staffed and re-imagined pub re-opened.
