The cheese market of Edam

The cheese market of Edam

Edam, Netherlands (NL)
After Edam was granted the right to have weekly markets, commercial cheese markets stayed in the town until 1922. The cheese was brought to the market by local farmers on boats, and the cheese was carried to the market by sledges. At the market, the cheese was shown to merchants. After being tested for their quality, the price was settled by haggling until there was agreement. Afterwards, the cheese was brought to a warehouse where it was kept until the quality was at its best.

Since 1989, the cheese market in Edam has been revived as a re-enactment for tourists. It's held each Wednesday in July and August.

In Leg 1 of The Amazing Race 38, teams had to travel by tandem bicycle to this market. There, they had to catch 30 balls of Edam cheese being unloaded off of a boat, stack them onto a wooden carrier, and deliver the cheese to a vendor to receive their next clue
