Major John Andre was head of the British secret intelligence during the American Revolutionary War. He and American General Benedict Arnold plotted a scheme that would have turned West Point over to the British.
Andre was captured by the New York militia and held temporarily at the tavern called The Old 76 House on September 23, 1780. Andre was hung as a spy on October 2, 1780 in nearby Tappan, NY.
