Thích Quảng Đức was a Vietnamese monk who set himself on fire in an act of self-immolation to protest persuction of the Buddhist monks by the Vietnamese government. The act occured on this street corner on June 11, 1963. Malcom Browne took a Pulitzer Prize winning photo of the monk's death, drawing world-wide attention to the monks' cause.
