Thompson International Speedway

Thompson, Connecticut (CT), US
America's first asphalt race track. John Hoenig lost his farm in a hurricane that devastated the area in 1938. He went forward with building his vision of a "super speedway" as the area recovered from the damage. It opened in 1940 as a 5/8 mile high banked oval track and was known as "The Indianapolis of the East". The Hoenig family still owns and operates this NASCAR sanctioned track today.
