Two Former Southern Tunnel Portals of the Kingsway Tram Subway

The tunnel lead to the two tram stations, Aldwych and Holborn, which are both abandoned. This end of the former tunnel is now the Strand Underpass. While the tunnel portal at Southampton Row is still there with both rails and the original brick road surface in placeto this day.

The tram subway opend in 1906 and closed in 1952 due to the withdraw of the tram system in London that would be replaced by buses. This tunnel was demolished during the contruction of the Strand Underpass in 1964. The orignial tunnel was replaced in 1937 when a rebuilding of Waterloo Bridge required the diversion of the side entrance to the tramway, a new position centrally underneath the bridge was made, which opened on 21st November of that year.

The replacment tunnel was also demolished during construction of the Starnd Underpass.
