The Union County Courthouse was built in 1890. The Romanesque styled courthouse was designed by architects G.W. Bunting and Son and was constructed by William McKay. The courthouse was the third for the county which was formed in formed in 1821. The county was formed from the union of parts of Fayette, Franklin and Wayne counties, thus the name Union County. The original county seat was Brownsville but the county seat was moved to Liberty in 1824 because of its more central location.
