Well, I'm sure that's what Donald Douglas was thinking when he created the DC-8. These birds are built like a brick outhouse and still serve well as cargo aircraft even long after their passenger days are over. Boeing might have had the best aerodynamicists and Lockheed had the best systems guys, but Douglas had structures guys who built their planes to last. It's why there's more DC-8s flying than 707s, why there's more DC-10s flying than Tristars, and why when the last 777 is retired, the flight crew will be picked up and flown home on a DC-9 or MD-80!
