Volendam is located on the site of what was once, way back in 1357, the harbour of the historic city of Edam. Edam was granted the right to call itself a city in that year, as well as the right to "dam" in its old harbour and dig a new one to the north-east. On the site of the old harbour a new settlement formed, which was called Volendam, meaning "a dam which has been filled".
