Washington D.C. is famous for its beautiful cherry blossoms. Not many know that the trees were a gift from a country we went to war with. In 1912 Japan gave the United States 3,020 cherry blossom trees to celebrate the nations' growing friendship. The 1912 gift replaced some 2,000 trees which had been destroyed by disease in 1910. In 1965 another 3,800 tress were given.
