The writer Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes in the short story "The Final Problem", printed in 1893 but set in 1891, during a fight between Sherlock Holmes and the Professor Moriarty. After public pressure for many years, he resurrected his hero, writing "The Hound of the Baskervilles", printed in 1901, set before Sherlock Holmes' death.
